Free Gemini drops to Flash Lite on October 9. Free users have better options now.

From October 9, free Gemini app users lose Flash and Pro and keep only Flash Lite. Here is exactly what changes on each plan, what stays free for developers, and where to go if you want a capable AI assistant without paying.

Free Gemini drops to Flash Lite on October 9. Free users have better options now.

Starting October 9, anyone using the Gemini app on a free personal account will be limited to Flash Lite, Google's smallest model. The change, first reported by The Verge and confirmed on Google's support page, removes Flash and Pro from the free tier and moves them up the subscription ladder. Google has not stated a reason.

What each Gemini plan gets after October 9

PlanPriceModels in the Gemini app
Free$0Flash Lite only
Google AI Plus$4.99/monthFlash Lite and Flash (loses Pro)
Google AI Pro$19.99/monthFlash Lite, Flash and Pro
Google AI Ultra$99.99/monthAll of the above plus Deep Think

Usage limits on every plan are compute-based: they refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and higher effort settings use more of your allowance. Google expresses them only as multiples of the free tier (2x for Plus, 4x for Pro, more for Ultra) and publishes no absolute numbers. Free users get the change on October 9; AI Plus subscribers are told to expect an email with their own date.

Developers: the API is not affected

This is a consumer app change. The Gemini API free tier in AI Studio still covers a long list of Flash and Flash-Lite models, plus Gemini 2.5 Pro. Two caveats for anyone building on it. Content sent through the free tier is used to improve Google's products, and the paid price of Gemini 3.8 Flash doubles on January 1, 2027, from $0.75 to $1.50 per million input tokens and from $3.75 to $7.50 per million output tokens. If Gemini Flash is in your production budget for next year, re-run the math now.

Where free users can go instead

If you used free Gemini for writing, research or everyday questions, Flash Lite will feel like a step down. These are the free options that held up when we checked their pricing pages this week:

  1. Claude (free plan). Anthropic's free tier includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file and code analysis, memory, connectors and Artifacts. It is the strongest all-round replacement for writing and analysis.
  2. ChatGPT (free plan). Still the default general assistant, with usage limits that tighten on OpenAI's newest models. Our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison covers where each one is stronger.
  3. Perplexity (free plan). The better pick if you mainly used Gemini to look things up, since every answer comes with sources. See Gemini vs Perplexity.
  4. Mistral Le Chat (now branded Vibe). Mistral's pricing page lists a free tier with limited messages, search and image generation, a reasonable option if you prefer a European provider.

If you run a startup, the best free deal is not a free plan

The same week Google cut its free tier, Anthropic launched a startup program that gives eligible companies a free year of Claude Team for up to five seats plus $1,000 in API credits. To qualify, your company must have been founded in the last five years or raised funding in the last two; bootstrapped startups can apply. You need a Claude Console account and a company email on your website's domain. Two fine-print points: the free Team year applies only if you are new to Team, and the API credits expire six months after they are granted.

"We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone." - Anthropic, via TechCrunch

Is AI Plus worth $4.99 now?

For a light user who wants Gemini specifically, AI Plus is the cheapest way back to Flash, but it now excludes Pro, which used to be its main draw. At that point a free Claude or ChatGPT plan covers the same ground for $0, and the $19.99 tier is where Gemini's paid value sits, especially for people who also use Google Workspace. Google's newest model, Gemini 4 Argon, is not in any consumer plan yet, so it is not a reason to upgrade today.
