What is Trigger.dev?

Trigger.dev is an open-source platform for building and running background jobs, workflows and AI agents in TypeScript. You write tasks in your own codebase and deploy them to Trigger.dev Cloud or a self-hosted instance, and the platform handles long-running execution with checkpointing, retries, queues, concurrency limits, cron schedules and alerts. Realtime streams send run status and LLM output to your frontend. The project is Apache 2.0 licensed and has more than 16,000 GitHub stars.

For AI work, chat.agent provides streaming chat agents with tool calling and human-in-the-loop approval. Releases in late October 2026 added hosted webhooks, Slack and Linear agents for chat.agent, streaming sub-agents, and a beta that lets webhooks from services such as Stripe, GitHub and Slack start or resume agents. Build extensions add Python, Prisma, Puppeteer and FFmpeg, and an MCP server is available for AI coding assistants. According to Y Combinator, the company was founded in 2022 and was part of the Winter 2023 batch.

The free plan needs no credit card and includes $5 of compute credit per month, 20 concurrent runs and 1 day of log retention. Hobby costs $10 per month with $10 of credit, 50 concurrent runs and 7-day logs. Pro costs $50 per month with $50 of credit, 200 concurrent runs, 25 team members and 30-day logs, with paid add-ons for more. Compute beyond the included credit is billed per second by machine size, and Enterprise pricing is custom.

Claude is the best AI assistant for long-document work and research where accuracy matters. Its context window of up to 1M tokens and resistance to sycophancy make it the honest choice when you need a thinking partner rather than an agreeable assistant. Start on the free tier; the Pro plan at $20/month is worth it if you regularly hit the free usage limits, and Max ($100/month) or Ultra ($200/month) suit heavier daily use.

ChatGPT is the most capable all-in-one AI assistant available. Its combination of image generation, voice mode, code execution, web browsing, and a large custom GPT ecosystem makes it the default choice for users who want one tool that handles everything. The tradeoff is that it is rarely the deepest tool on any single task.

Cursor is the most powerful AI code editor available. Its multi-file editing is ahead of plugin-based alternatives, making large-scale refactors practical in ways GitHub Copilot cannot match. At $30/month for Premium (Grok models included, other models billed at API rates) it is a meaningful upgrade for any developer doing more than small isolated changes.

GitHub Copilot is the right starting point for developers adopting AI-assisted coding. It integrates into whatever editor you already use, requires no workflow change, and has a usable free tier. The Pro plan at $10/month is the lowest-cost path to unlimited AI completions, though chat and agent work now draw from a monthly credit allowance; heavy agent users should look at Pro+ ($39) or Max ($100).
