Editorial take

Spark is the most convincing case yet for an always-on agent: it lives in Google's cloud rather than on your laptop, so scheduled work actually happens while you sleep. Until the US-only beta, the $99.99/mo entry price and the undisclosed usage caps loosen up, it is a glimpse of the future that most people should watch rather than buy.

What is Gemini Spark?

Gemini Spark is Google's always-on personal AI agent, announced at Google I/O 2026. Unlike chat assistants that only work while you have a tab open, Spark runs on dedicated Google Cloud VMs and keeps executing tasks around the clock: monitoring your inbox, tracking prices, compiling research digests and planning events, checking in with you before it takes major actions.

It is built on the same Antigravity agent harness that powers Google's developer platform and runs on Gemini 3.5 Flash. The headline features are Tasks, Skills and Schedules: you teach Spark reusable behaviors in plain language, then let it run them on a timer or when a condition triggers. It gets its own email address, browses the web through Chrome, and plugs natively into Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs and the rest of Google Workspace, with custom MCP server support for third-party connections. A macOS desktop agent added in June 2026 extends it to local file automation.

The catch is access. Spark is a US-only beta perk of the Google AI Ultra subscription, so the effective entry price is $99.99 per month, and it ships with undisclosed usage caps that even Ultra subscribers cannot raise. Early reviews called it genuinely useful for research, shopping and inbox chores, while flagging open questions about privacy and purchase permissions for an agent with this much account access.
